Did you catch Europe Direct Stockholm’s Christmas calendar on Instagram, celebrating the EU’s linguistic diversity?
Throughout December, we created a virtual Advent calendar under the hashtag #EDSjulkalender, where our followers could explore the 24 official languages of the European Union.
With our expertise in culture, we chose to highlight the variety of languages in the EU – which just happens to include 24! Each day, we shared Christmas-themed words and fun facts about the languages, such as the origin of “yule” in Old English and the fact that Swedish is called the world’s most melodic language.
Thanks to collaborations with Europe Direct offices in Germany, Estonia, France, Poland, Finland, and the Canary Islands, we were able to include unique video greetings. These videos featured traditions from each country, along with Christmas greetings in their native languages.
