EU Day at Södertörn University: Perspectives on democracy – from Sweden to Brussels
April 14, 2026In collaboration with Upplev Europa, Europa Direkt Stockholm and Intercult present a series of open lectures on the theme of democracy in spring 2026. It is now time to present the third part of the series.
Democracy for all – how to increase political participation and build trust
Sweden has historically had a high voter turnout, but behind the numbers lies a growing divide. In some neighborhoods, participation in democratic processes is critically low, creating a democratic deficit where large parts of the population feel neither represented nor heard. How does this affect community cohesion, and what is needed to rebuild trust in our shared institutions?
In this lecture, Ahmed Abdirahman reflects on how we can break the negative trend where socio-economic background and place of residence determine the degree of political influence. Based on the work with Järvaveckan and recent reports on cultural participation, he discusses the importance of creating physical meeting places for dialog.
Welcome to an open lecture on Demkorati for all with Ahmed Abdirahman, founder and CEO of the Järvaveckan Foundation.
