On January 1st, 2025, Sweden celebrates 30 years as a member of the European Union! The EU membership is part of a historic peace project that has created opportunities for economic development, democracy, and security across Europe.
For Sweden, the membership has brought significant benefits – access to the single market and the ability to influence crucial issues such as climate, trade, and energy. The Swedish government is prioritizing the “four C’s within the European Collaboration”: the conflict (war) in Ukraine, criminality and the competitive market that goes hand in hand with the adjustments to climate change*. However, Intercult and Europe Direct Stockholm would like to add a fifth C: Culture! Thanks to EU programmes such as Erasmus+ and Creative Europe, Swedish artists and cultural workers have had the opportunity to participate in exciting international projects and exchanges. These programmes have not only strengthened ties between countries but also enriched Swedish cultural life with new ideas and perspectives.
The 30-year anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on what we have achieved and to look ahead at future challenges. European cooperation provides us with the tools to tackle major challenges together and create a sustainable future.
To mark the anniversary, Europe Direct Stockholm will launch a social media campaign in 2025, highlighting Sweden’s role in the EU and addressing current issues. There will also be an event at Södertörn University, where you can learn more about the EU and how the Union impacts our daily lives. Keep an eye out for these initiatives in our social media channels and join us in celebrating!
