The E-Residency: Virtual labs for reimagining sustainable artistic practices
This past April, E-ART successfully hosted its first E-Residency, a vibrant and engaging online space that brought together artists, makers and activists from across Europe for a week of learning, exchange, and co-creation.
Over five days, participants explored how to integrate sustainability into their artistic work â not just through materials, but also through values, processes, and community engagement. Each day began with a theoretical session led by experts from the E-ART partner organisations, followed by hands-on small group workshops focusing on one of six key material areas:
đš Natural pigments and paints
đ Paper
𧔠Textiles
đș bioceramics
đ Recycled plastic
Found objects
Within each group, artists and facilitators experimented with techniques and discussed real-world challenges such as waste management and access to sustainable resources which vary significantly depending on the local context.
Group sharing at the end of each day fostered a strong sense of connection and purpose. Participants voiced the importance of having spaces where creative minds can meet, share struggles, and build a collective vision for climate-conscious art. One key takeaway? The green transition in the arts needs both practical tools and spaces for empathy, exchange, and care.
đ ïž Next steps: Local ART LABS (June-September 2025)
Following the success of the online residency, the project now moves into its next phase with the launch of in-person Sustainable Art Labs. From June to September 2025, each partner will organise an ART LAB in: Italy, Greece,Spain,Sweden,Bulgaria and Ireland.
Each five-day lab will provide an immersive, collaborative experience focused on sustainable artistic creation. Artists will work with local, recycled or natural materials to co-create individual and collective works carrying environmental and social messages.
ART LABS will include:
đč Practical workshops with eco-friendly materials
đč Training sessions on sustainability in the arts
Collaborative creation and peer exchange
đč Artworks developed for inclusion in an international digital and local exhibition
